Citizens Academy

Citizens Academy

Edgewood Volunteer Fire Department is currently recruiting for a spring citizen’s fire academy (CFA). The CFA is a free non-operational four-week course that meets for three hours per week and is designed to expose the public to volunteer firefighting. During this course, you will get the insider’s view on how EVFD operates, put on protective fire fighting gear, see firsthand the apparatus we drive to calls and what equipment we use during different incidents, learn about the training required to be a volunteer firefighter or first responder, learn about firefighting tactics and the basics of life saving, and learn how you should respond in an emergency situation.

The Citizens’ Fire Academy has a limited enrollment and we will answer common questions like: Why do firefighters do the things they do, take the risks they take? Are your smoke alarms in the right location? Do you know how to choose and use the right fire extinguisher? Do you know how
you would react in an emergency situation? Do you know what to do if a family member had a heart attack in your home, could you help them?

Every Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. EVFD opens its garage door to borough citizens to learn more about the citizens fire academy spring recruit class, tour the station, see our fire trucks and equipment, and answer questions on how you can volunteer.
