FEMA SAFER Scholarship
Edgewood Volunteer Fire Department offers scholarships to qualified applicants who have completed any level of firefighter/EMT training or are interested in becoming a firefighter or first responder. These funds are part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program. Scholarship awards are up to $5000 and may be renewed annually. In addition, these funds may be used for tuition, program enrollment fees, books and school supplies, or other expenses associated with higher education. Eligible programs of higher education include colleges, universities, apprenticeship programs, technical or trade programs among others. Recipients of the scholarship are required to become members of EVFD and devote time in service by answering calls and protecting our community. In addition, recipients must pass a physical examination and a background check.
In addition, EVFD offers a live-in program where students reside rent and utility free in the fire station. Our live in quarters have a full kitchen, wireless internet, state of the art entertainment system, and bunk room. In addition, EVFD is conveniently located on the Port Authority east bus way creating a very short commute to all of the colleges and universities in the Pittsburgh area.
Allegheny County Fire Volunteer Education, Service, and Training Scholarship (Fire VEST program)
Allegheny County Executive created a partnership with Allegheny County Fire Academy (ACFA) and Allegheny County Community College (CCAC) to offer students full scholarships for an associate’s degree or certificate program at CCAC, as well as, training at the ACFA. Of the 200 scholarships awarded annually, 150 are reserved for new recruits in exchange for a five year commitment to a volunteer fire department in Allegheny County. The additional 50 scholarships will be awarded to existing volunteers in exchange for a commitment of five additional years of service.
